Description

Vedius Pollio was rich, a Roman knight and a friend of the emperor Augustus. In his fish pond he kept giant moray eels, and he threw slaves he wanted dead to them. Then Augustus came to dinner, a servant dropped a crystal cup, and Vedius pointed at the pond. The servant broke free, fell at the emperor's feet and begged, not for his life, only not to be eaten. So Augustus had every crystal cup in the house brought out and smashed in front of Vedius, and the pond filled in. Meanwhile other Romans adored their eels: Antonia put golden earrings on hers.
