Description
In 211 CE, a man born on the coast of North Africa died in northern England after ruling the Roman Empire for nearly two decades. He spoke Punic before Latin. He was the first emperor born on the African continent. This is the story of Septimius Severus — the outsider who remade Rome forever.
Born in 145 CE in Leptis Magna (modern Libya), Severus rose from provincial obscurity to the pinnacle of Roman power. He disbanded the Praetorian Guard, defeated rivals across three continents, raised soldier pay by 50%, and broke the Italian aristocracy's monopoly by appointing North Africans, Syrians, and Greeks to the highest offices. He sacked the Parthian capital at Ctesiphon, annexed Mesopotamia, and pushed Rome to its greatest territorial extent.
At age 62, he traveled to Britain to campaign beyond Hadrian's Wall — and never returned.
This is the untold story they don't teach in school.
