Description

R.C. Sproul revisits Jonathan Edwards' famous sermon Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God and argues that it has often been badly misunderstood. Edwards was not delighting in the prospect of judgment. He loved his people and warned them because he believed the danger facing the unrepentant sinner was real. Sproul walks through Edwards' vivid biblical imagery: the slippery bridge, the dam holding back overwhelming waters, the drawn bow aimed at the sinner's heart, and the slender thread suspending the sinner over judgment. Yet Sproul sees something more than wrath in the sermon. The hand keeping the sinner from falling is also a picture of the extraordinary patience and grace of God. The danger, Sproul argues, is creating a god of love who has no wrath, holiness, or judgment. Such a god cannot be reconciled with the God revealed in Scripture. Apart from Christ and the gospel, Sproul concludes, there is ultimately no answer to the question of why any sinner remains under God's patience rather than His judgment.
