Description

You already have a picture in your head of the age of dinosaurs. A swamp, drab green ferns, a brown sky, and something enormous roaring in the distance. That image is almost entirely wrong. The real Earth the dinosaurs lived on was stranger, greener, warmer and far more colourful than anything you were shown as a child. In this documentary we walk through what the planet actually looked like when dinosaurs ruled it, using modern science rather than old Hollywood myths. For most of their 165-million-year reign there was no grass anywhere on Earth. There were no polar ice caps at all. The continents were fused into a single supercontinent you could have walked across from pole to pole. And for a stretch of time longer than the entire history of mammals, there was not a single flower on the planet. We break the age of dinosaurs into its three real chapters, because they were effectively three different worlds. The Triassic, hot and dry and dominated by a single baked landmass called Pangaea, where dinosaurs were the underdogs. The Jurassic, green and wet and split apart by new oceans, ruled by the largest animals that ever walked on land. And the Cretaceous, warm and drowned in shallow seas, where the very first flowers opened and changed the colour of the world forever. You'll also see how much modern paleontology has changed the picture of the animals themselves. Direct fossil evidence now shows feathers across a wide range of dinosaurs, complex branching feathers built for insulation and display. Preserved pigment structures have even let scientists reconstruct their actual colours. And nesting colonies, trackways and juveniles preserved in groups reveal herding, parental care and complex behaviour. These were not movie monsters. They were real animals living in a vivid, ever-changing world. If you love paleontology, prehistoric animals, and deep-time documentaries about our planet's history, subscribe for more.
