Description

If you had to spend your entire life earning the time necessary to survive, how different would that really be from the world we live in today? Andrew Niccol's In Time imagines a world where people stop aging at 25, but only have a limited amount of time left on their biological clocks. In this society, time is currency. You work for it, spend it, save it, borrow it, and—if you run out—you die. At first, the concept sounds like classic science fiction. But the deeper you look at In Time, the more uncomfortable the comparison with our own world becomes. In this video essay, we explore In Time's themes of money, class inequality, capitalism, poverty, work, and the constant anxiety of running out of time. Because while we don't literally pay with hours and minutes, we constantly exchange our time for money. We spend hours working so we can afford food. We spend years working to afford a home. We trade our time for healthcare, education, transportation, and basic necessities. And for millions of people, the fear isn't simply "How much money do I have?"—it's "How long can I keep going?"
