What If Humanity Could No Longer Have Children?

What happens to humanity when it loses all hope for the future? In Alfonso Cuarón’s Children of Men (2006), the world is slowly dying. Humanity has become infertile, children are no longer being born, and civilization is collapsing under the weight of despair, violence, and fear. With no future to believe in, people are left wondering whether life still has any meaning at all. But Children of Men is more than a dystopian science fiction film. It is a haunting exploration of hopelessness, human nature, faith, and the desperate need to believe that tomorrow might still be possible. In this video essay, we explore the bleak world of Children of Men and the people forced to live in it. What does it mean to exist in a world where the last generation is growing old without anyone to inherit what remains? How do people cope with the knowledge that humanity may be approaching its final days? And when the future disappears, what is left to live for? Through its powerful symbolism, immersive cinematography, religious imagery, and unsettlingly realistic portrayal of societal collapse, Children of Men asks some of the most profound questions about the human condition.
