Description
What is The Platform really about?
At first glance, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia's The Platform (El Hoyo, 2019) seems like a straightforward allegory about capitalism, class inequality, wealth distribution, and the exploitation of the poor. But the deeper you look, the harder it becomes to reduce the film to a simple political message.
In this video essay, we explore the true meaning of The Platform, its symbolism, its ending, and the many interpretations hidden within its brutal vertical prison.
Is The Platform criticizing capitalism? Socialism? Communism? Or is the film asking a much more uncomfortable question: what happens to human beings when they are given power over others?
The film's central system may be designed to expose economic inequality, but its characters reveal something deeper about human nature and selfishness. When people find themselves at the top, they consume without thinking about those below them. When they fall to the bottom, some become desperate enough to do the same things they once condemned.
Through Goreng, Trimagasi, Baharat, Imoguiri, Miharu, the mysterious Platform, and the prison's endless levels, the film explores greed, morality, altruism, violence, survival, privilege, inequality, sacrifice, and the human tendency to prioritize ourselves over strangers.
The question is whether we would behave differently if we were the ones benefiting from it.
