Description
What happens if all crime became legal for one night?
That’s the terrifying premise behind The Purge — but beneath its masks, violence, and dystopian horror lies a much deeper question:
Does violence actually release something inside us, or does the idea of “catharsis” simply give us an excuse to justify it?
In this video essay, I take a closer look at The Purge and the philosophy behind its infamous premise. Using ideas from Sigmund Freud and Aristotle, I explore the catharsis hypothesis and the belief that expressing violent impulses might somehow cleanse, control, or reduce them.
But The Purge complicates that idea.
What begins as a thought experiment about what would happen if crime became legal quickly becomes a story about class, inequality, political power, social control, fear, and the ways societies create moral excuses for violence.
The Purge isn't simply asking, “What would you do if there were no laws?”
It may be asking something much more uncomfortable:
What if the laws themselves are part of the problem?
