Description

At 104, I’ve watched hundreds of people grow old, and at some point, usually in their late sixties, every single one of them hit the same fork in the road. The work was over. The children were raised. And for the first time since they were about twenty, nobody needed anything from them on a Tuesday. Some of them found something to do with their hands and their mind and their week. And some of them turned on the television. I am telling you plainly, with 104 years behind me, that I have never once seen somebody stay sharp into their nineties who had nothing to do. Not once. In this video I give you 12 hobbies that actually keep a person young, and I’m not handing you a list of ways to pass the time. Every one of these does a specific job on a person, and I tell you exactly what that job is. I explain why gardening comes first and why it beats everything else on the list, because a garden needs you tomorrow and the weeds came whether you felt like it or not. I explain why starting an instrument at 70 when you’re dreadful at it is better for your brain than almost anything else, and why being a genuine beginner after 70 is worth more than people know. I explain why a walk is not exercise but a thin thread that keeps you connected to a neighborhood, and why people who stop walking vanish from that neighborhood about six months later. I explain the one kind of volunteering that works and the kind that does nothing, which comes down to whether somebody notices you specifically didn’t come. And I explain the twelfth one, the one people laugh at, which has done more for me than anything else on this list, because it reverses the single feeling that does more damage in old age than any food on earth. Then I give you the rules for choosing. Pick two, not twelve. Make sure at least one has another human being attached to it, because a sharp mind in an empty house is only half a life. And put them on a fixed day, because a hobby that depends on your mood lasts about five weeks. A hobby is not how you fill the time you have left. Everything else in old age is subtraction. This is the only column where you can still add. Subscribe for more life wisdom from people who’ve been there. Real stories. Real advice. No filters. No regrets left unspoken. Leave a comment and tell me which two you’re going to pick, and which day of the week you’re putting them on. I read every comment and love hearing your stories. #lifeadvice #lifelessons #hobbies #healthyaging #over60 #retirement #staysharp #centenarian ABOUT this Channel This channel features honest conversations with people over 60 sharing their biggest mistakes, deepest regrets, and most powerful life lessons.
