Description
Nobody is ever going to tell you this. That's the trouble with getting old — people stop being honest with you. They're too polite, or too fond of you, or too afraid of hurting an old person's feelings. So if you've picked up a habit that's quietly pushing people away, you will very likely never find out. They'll simply come round a little less. And then a little less than that.
I'm 104 years old and I've got no reason left to be polite, so I'm going to tell you the seven habits that make people quietly avoid an old person. And I'll confess right at the start that I had four of them myself, and nobody said a word to me for years.
In this video I share all seven: making every conversation about your health and the one-sentence rule that fixes it, complaining as your default setting and why it makes people leave heavier than they arrived, talking for an hour without ever asking them a single question, the advice and criticism nobody asked for that lands as "I don't think you're capable," the guilt at the door that makes people dread the goodbye, refusing all help and then quietly resenting not being helped, and living entirely backwards until you become a museum instead of company.
And I won't leave you with a list of faults and no remedy. I'll tell you the four simple things that make people actually want to come back — and they're so simple you can start the very next time somebody walks through your door.
If you recognized yourself in one or two of these, don't sit there feeling ashamed. Every one of these habits comes from something perfectly human — pain, loneliness, pride, or loving somebody so much you can't help interfering. And every one of them can be changed quickly. I changed mine at eighty, and I got a different relationship with my own family out of it, and twenty-four more years to enjoy it.
