Description

I'm going to say something that sounds absurd coming from a woman of 104. The hardest years of my life were not the depression, when we ate what we could get. They were not the war years, waiting on letters that took six weeks and sometimes never came. They were not even the year I lost Robert. The hardest ten years of my life were between 65 and 75. And every time I say that out loud, people give me the same look, because they hear those numbers and think retirement, reward, the good part. In this video I explain exactly what happens in that decade and why almost nobody warns you it's coming. Everything ends at once. The work ends on a Friday with a cake in the break room. The children no longer need you, and needing you was a job too. Your parents die and you become the oldest generation. Your friends start going, not one or two, but as a rhythm. And your body changes its terms on you for the first time. I talk about the day I stood in my own kitchen at ten in the morning after 31 years of teaching and had no idea what a person is supposed to do at ten in the morning. I talk about my husband Robert, a railroad man for 38 years, who kept waking at 5:15 with nowhere to go, and what he said to me when I told him he could stay in bed. Three words that I think contain the entire crisis of that decade. I talk about becoming invisible while still being completely awake in there, because there is no year where the inside of you catches up to the outside. And I talk about the arithmetic everyone does alone at night somewhere in that decade, the first sum of your life small enough to actually picture, and the two completely different roads people take the moment they finish it. I share the story of Harold, who retired at 65 and died at 79 having been finished for eleven years, and Delores, who lost her husband at 64, learned to drive at 66, and lived to 94 with something in every one of those years. Same decade. Same losses. Two endings. Then I give you the five things you have to do to get through it. If you are 68 right now and wondering why you feel worse than you did at 50 when your life is easier by every measure, there is nothing wrong with you. You have walked into the hardest stretch of the whole road. I had thirty more years after that decade, and they were better than the ten before them. Subscribe for more life wisdom from people who've been there. Real stories. Real advice. No filters. No regrets left unspoken. Leave a comment and tell me which decade of your life was hardest, and what got you through it. I read every comment and love hearing your stories. #lifeadvice #lifelessons #retirement #aging #over60 #healthyaging #purpose #centenarian ABOUT this Channel This channel features honest conversations with people over 60 sharing their biggest mistakes, deepest regrets, and most powerful life lessons.
