Description
There are boxes in your house right now that you haven't opened in twenty years. And one day, somebody who loves you is going to have to open every single one of them, alone, in the worst week of their life. I've watched a great many families clear out a house after somebody passed — exhausted, grieving people standing in a hallway at ten o'clock at night, surrounded by forty years of belongings, with no idea which things mattered and which were simply there. Nearly all of it ends up in a skip.
In this video I share the five things I'd have you throw away before you turn sixty-five, even if it hurts. The boxes you've never once opened — and why you must open them yourself, because the one precious thing hiding inside will otherwise go out with all the rest. The clothes that fit a person you aren't anymore, and the small daily unkindness of a wardrobe that tells you you're not quite right as you are. The things you're keeping for your children, which — and I'd rather you heard this from me — they very likely don't want and will never tell you so. The unfinished projects, with permission to let most of them go and a push to finally start the one you still want. And the hardest one of all: the keepsakes of old pain you've kept for years purely as evidence you were wronged.
I'll also tell you exactly what's worth keeping, and the one test that sorts a treasure from clutter — because I'm not asking you to live in an empty room. I'm asking you to be the one who decides.
And I'll tell you why the deadline is sixty-five rather than later. At sixty-five you can still climb the loft ladder, still lift the boxes, still make every decision yourself with a clear head. Wait another fifteen years and either you won't be able to — or it won't be you doing it at all.
Everything you refuse to decide about, somebody else will have to decide about. And they'll do it faster, and with less love, than you would have.
