Description
I got married on a Saturday morning in September of 1941. I was nineteen years old, and I want to tell you what I actually remember about that morning, because it is not what people think. I remember my hands being cold. I remember a woman I barely knew leaning down to say I looked beautiful. And I remember standing in a small room in a dress that didn't quite fit, waiting for somebody to tell me something true. Nobody did.
So after 104 years of living and 68 years of marriage, this video is exactly what I would say if I could walk into any bride's room on any wedding morning, anywhere in the world. I'd tell her that everyone in that house is going to call this the happiest day of her life, and I hope to God they're wrong, because if this is the peak then what a small thing she's signed up for. I'd tell her she isn't marrying this man, she's marrying four or five men she has never met, including the one he becomes when his mother dies and the one he becomes at 60 when the work is over. I'd tell her the love will go away, more than once, and come back every time, and that most couples who split didn't leave in the storm, they left at low tide and decided the ocean was gone. I'd tell her that whatever the two of them do in their first real argument, they'll be doing for the next fifty years.
I'd tell her to notice who she reaches for with the small things, the woman at the market with the ridiculous hat, because that is the truest measure of a marriage and no minister ever asks about it. I'd tell her not to marry a renovation plan. And I'd tell her the one nobody says out loud, that after today nobody is ever coming to check on the two of them, which means they have to check on themselves, and I share the ten-minute monthly habit Robert and I used for over fifty years. This isn't only for brides. If you've been married thirty years and gone quiet, every single one of these can be started tonight. Nobody's coming to check on you, which also means nobody is stopping you.
