Description

Scientists are literally using living animals to recreate extinct species — and some of these experiments are already getting insane. From scientists editing gray wolf DNA toward the dire wolf, to using Asian elephant cells for the woolly mammoth, pigeon cells for the dodo, and even a tiny fat-tailed dunnart for the extinct thylacine, modern de-extinction is starting to look completely different from what most people imagine. In this video, we're counting down 5 extinct animals scientists are attempting to recreate using their closest living relatives. We'll look at the bluebuck, dire wolf, dodo bird, woolly mammoth, and thylacine/Tasmanian tiger, along with the living animals providing the DNA, cells, eggs, and reproductive systems needed to make these projects possible. We'll also break down how gene editing, genetic engineering, cloning, ancient DNA, CRISPR, surrogate animals, embryos, and de-extinction technology could allow scientists to take biology that exists today and gradually rewrite it toward species that disappeared hundreds or even thousands of years ago. The craziest example starts with an animal small enough to fit in your hand… while scientists are trying to push its cells toward a predator that was roughly the size of a dog. Extinct animals might be coming back in a way nobody expected.
