Description
A black vulture balances on a floating caiman carcass while attempting to feed. Scavenging birds take advantage of available remains, including those in water, where an unstable feeding surface makes accessing food more difficult.
Black vultures feed mainly on carrion. They locate meals using their eyesight and by watching other scavengers. They frequently follow turkey vultures, whose stronger sense of smell helps them discover carcasses.
By consuming animal remains, vultures help recycle nutrients through ecosystems. Black vultures are also highly social, gathering at communal roosts and feeding alongside members of their family groups.
