Description

Built to Last — my old-world household manual: https://ezrakaine.com I was seven, maybe eight, standing at my grandfather's elbow while he worked. He said nothing to me. Not "watch this." Not "stand back." Nothing. Then, without looking up, he shifted half a step to the left. That was the whole lesson. He'd opened a gap so I could see better, and not a word of it was ever said. If your grandfather taught you his trade, you already know what I mean. If he didn't, not one thing on this list will make much sense. Twenty-one things that passed between a man and a boy in a workshop without either of them saying a word about it. And number one isn't a memory at all. It still happens to me now. My name is Ezra Kaine. Fourth-generation wheelwright, hill country of eastern Ohio, and everything I know about this trade I learned at Daadi Amos's elbow, mostly in silence. None of it was ever really the trade itself. Every one of these was a man deciding, quietly and one piece at a time, whether a boy could be trusted — with a tool, with a silence, with a job nobody else had managed, and eventually with the whole shop. The trade was just what we happened to be doing while all of that went on underneath it. Tell me in the comments if you had somebody like this — what trade it was, whether it was a grandfather or somebody else who took that job on, and what county you were in. I'd like to know how many of us are out here, and to read the small, specific things nobody else in your life ever understood either. Twenty-one things, and not one of them was ever really about the wood, or the wheel, or the iron. Every one of them was about a man who did what he was doing without ever once saying so. Stand next to somebody today. You don't have to say anything. #Grandfather #LessonsFromGrandpa #FamilyTrade #Apprenticeship #Woodworking #Wheelwright #OldWaysAreBest #Homesteading #TraditionalCraftsmanship #PassedDown #Nostalgia #LostSkills
