The Forgotten WWII Airfield That Became Australia's Lost Race Circuit

🚗✈️ What if I told you an ordinary suburban park in western Sydney was once a Royal Australian Air Force airfield… before becoming one of Australia’s greatest motor racing circuits? Today, Whalan Reserve is filled with sports fields, walking tracks and quiet suburban streets. But beneath the grass lies an extraordinary forgotten story. During the Second World War, this land was transformed into RAAF Mount Druitt Aerodrome, complete with a 1,524-metre runway, aircraft hangars and military infrastructure built to defend Australia during one of the nation’s darkest periods. After the war, the airfield took on an unexpected role, becoming a massive storage depot for thousands of aerial bombs before beginning an entirely new chapter. In 1948, the former runway was transformed into the Mount Druitt Race Circuit, one of Australia’s earliest permanent motor racing venues. Legendary drivers, including future three-time Formula One World Champion Jack Brabham, competed here alongside Jaguars, Ferraris and MGs as crowds of up to 30,000 spectators gathered to witness the excitement. Today, almost everything has disappeared beneath housing estates, warehouses and sporting fields… But not everything.
