Description

This Hawaiian island was bombed for 49 years — and you still can't visit it. Kahoolawe island was once home to Native Hawaiian fishing villages, temples, and trails. Then the military used it as a bombing and weapons training range for 49 years. The soil was damaged and unexploded bombs were left buried everywhere. Protests, boat landings, and occupations helped end the bombing in 1990. In 1994, control passed back to Hawaii. Today Kahoolawe is protected as the Kahoolawe Island Reserve. Most visitors need permission, and wandering is still dangerous because of unexploded ordnance. Now volunteers are restoring native plants and cultural sites across the dry landscape. This forbidden Hawaiian island is being reclaimed, one careful acre at a time. This is a true forgotten history story from Hawaii — perfect for fans of abandoned places and strange but true stories.
