Description
He sold Jell-O for $450. It became a million-dollar empire.
This is the strange but true food history of Pearl Waite, the carpenter who invented Jell-O in 1897.
In 1897, Pearl Waite mixed fruit flavors into powdered gelatin and his wife May named it Jell-O. With no money to advertise, he sold the entire business in 1899 for just $450 to Orator Woodward. Woodward ran magazine ads and handed out free recipe books door-to-door. By 1906, Jell-O was making over $1 million a year.
Then came the weird part — 1950s lime Jell-O salads with cabbage, carrots, tuna, olives and mayo. Pearl never saw a penny of it.
