Description

On the evening of July 31, 1999, 17-year-old J.B. Beasley and her best friend, 17-year-old Tracie Hawlett, left Dothan, Alabama to attend a birthday celebration. After making a wrong turn on an unlit rural road, they arrived over twenty miles off-course in the small town of Ozark. At 11:35 p.m., they stopped at a closed Chevron station. Tracie used a public payphone to reassure her mother that they had gotten directions and were on their way back. They never arrived. The following morning, J.B.'s black 1993 Mazda 929 was located undamaged outside 323 Herring Avenue. For six hours, investigators tracked the vehicle from the outside before opening the trunk cavity. Inside, both teenagers were discovered executed by single close-range gunshot wounds to the head. For two decades, the investigation faced a complete standstill. A pristine semen DNA profile was successfully recovered from the scene, but because the perpetrator had no prior felony record, the sample sat completely outside the national CODIS index. In 2018, everything shifted. By processing the crime scene data through investigative genetic genealogy and public consumer databases, Parabon NanoLabs mapped a massive reverse family tree. The genetic markers stopped at a man living less than a mile from the dump site—a local truck driver and prominent community preacher named Coley McCraney. Welcome to The Forensic Strand. Today, we dissect the chronological timeline, the tracking failures, and the definitive forensic data that dismantled a twenty-year double life. #TrueCrime #ColdCase #Forensics #TheForensicStrand #Documentary #Unsolved #Alabama *** If you have insights or perspectives on the 1999 Ozark investigation, let us know where you are watching from in the comments below.
