Description

Why did prehistoric animals get so huge? From giant dragonfly-like insects with 70-centimeter wingspans to sauropod dinosaurs weighing tens of tonnes, Titanoboa stretching over 13 meters, and Paraceratherium becoming one of the largest land mammals ever — prehistoric Earth produced animals at sizes that seem almost impossible today. But there was never one single reason. In this video, we explore the real science behind prehistoric gigantism — why ancient insects became enormous, why sauropods could reach such extreme sizes, how hotter climates helped giant snakes like Titanoboa, and how empty ecological niches allowed mammals to become giants after the dinosaurs disappeared. For years, scientists blamed ancient oxygen levels for giant insects. New 2026 research challenged part of that explanation, suggesting the real story may involve ecology, competition, predators, body design, and the limits of the environment itself. Different giants evolved for different reasons. Some had lighter skeletons. Some lived in hotter worlds. Some grew because competitors disappeared. And some only existed because nothing else had evolved to stop them. So why were prehistoric animals so huge? The answer is much stranger than “more oxygen.”
