Description
Why do churches become weak? Thomas Schreiner tells a story from his early years at Clifton Baptist Church that illustrates how compromise can slowly enter a congregation.
The issue was simple: should a church clearly affirm that believers should marry other believers? When an exception was suggested because, for some people, marrying an unbeliever might be their “only chance,” Schreiner immediately recognized the deeper problem. Biblical convictions can gradually be surrendered when obedience becomes difficult or inconvenient.
Connecting the story to Ezra and Nehemiah, Schreiner explains that the same problem weakened Israel: sin was allowed into the camp. One of the responsibilities of pastors and church leaders is therefore to hold the line when Scripture is clear, even when compromise seems easier.
