Description

Grant Reed was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Grant underwent a grueling 16½-hour brain surgery, followed by radiation and chemotherapy. The operation successfully removed the tumor, but left him with serious stroke-like symptoms, forcing him to relearn skills while continuing his fight against cancer.  But Grant found an unusual way to make the disease feel like something he could defeat. His family had deep connections to Ohio State, and Grant was a massive Buckeyes football fan. So when he decided he hated even saying the word “cancer,” he gave the disease a new name: “Michigan.” His reasoning was simple: “Ohio State always beats Michigan.” In 2013, Grant finished chemotherapy and went into remission. His story became so well known that even Michigan head coach Brady Hoke reached out and invited Grant and his family to the Ohio State–Michigan game. Sadly, Grant’s cancer eventually returned. After fighting the disease for seven years, Grant passed away in February 2019 at just 18 years old. But for years, Grant turned one of college football’s greatest rivalries into something much bigger than a game. ❤️🏈
