📗 Save $2,000 A Year On Whiskey With My Distiller Methods: https://wadecooperdistiller.com Dale paid 199 dollars and 94 cents for a bottle of Macallan 15 last Thursday, and about forty feet from where he stood, on the bottom shelf of the same aisle, there was a single malt from the same valley and the same kind of sherry wood for 50 dollars and 99 cents. Nobody had ever told him. Nothing on that shelf would. So this is ten ways to stop paying what Dale paid, counting down to number one. Along the way you learn the two words that change the price, matured and finished; why the age on a label is the youngest drop in the bottle; what the strength is worth and what it is not; and why the store's own name on the bottom shelf is somebody's whisky with the name taken off. The trick in the title comes from a man named Hoyt, who ran the warehouses at the second place I worked. He asked two questions of every fancy bottle a salesman left behind, what wood and how long, then found the cheapest bottle in town that gave the same two answers and set the pair on his windowsill. He called it pricing the wood. You can do it on your kitchen table with two glasses, a piece of tape and somebody else pouring. Number one is an 18 year old Speyside single malt with no distillery on the label, three years older than Dale's bottle, for about a third of his money. I tell you what it is, where it sits, and what you give up. I also tell you the honest version: a 50 dollar bottle is not a 200 dollar bottle, and I say where the difference is real. Your homework costs nothing: find the most expensive Speyside your store keeps behind glass, read the age, the strength and the one word, then bend down and find a bottle that beats it on two of the three. I spent 34 years in this industry making whiskey and looking after it, and a good part of those years filling barrels that went out under names that were not ours. Nobody paid me to say any of this. No distillery, no store, no bottler, no link, and nothing for sale. CHAPTERS: 00:00 – 199 dollars and 94 cents: Dale's Macallan 15, and the bottle forty feet away for 50 dollars and 99 cents 01:03 – The rye moves back a week: the tax came off in July and the shelf has not moved 01:15 – The promise: ten ways, and number one is three years older for a third of the money 01:39 – What this does not need: no membership, no waiting list, no tasting talk 01:56 – Who I am: 34 years, barrels under other names, and the arm 02:21 – This should bother you: the shelf is a plan from an office 03:07 – Ten: the name the whisky is hiding in, the spec on the Macallan 15 04:03 – Ten, continued: Glenfarclas 10, same valley, same wood, and how to find one yourself 05:21 – Nine: matured against finished 06:30 – Eight: buy the spirit, not the name; casks that move, and teaspooning 08:05 – Hoyt and the windowsill: pricing the wood 09:08 – Taking it back: a Glenfarclas 10 is not a Macallan 15 10:07 – Seven: the age is the youngest drop; the price per year in the wood 10:54 – Fair to the old bottle: the angels' share 11:25 – Six: the strength before the price; 43 against 40, and cask strength 12:35 – Five: the store's own name on the bottom shelf, and the bottler in California 14:12 – Four: know what month you are shopping in; the tariff from April 2025 to the 24th of July 15:18 – Three: stop paying for the number that is not there 16:05 – Two: side by side, and let somebody else pour 17:01 – Dale did it that Sunday: two out of three 17:38 – One: the 18 year old Speyside with no distillery on it, at Total Wine for 69 dollars and 99 cents 18:50 – The arithmetic: 3 dollars and 89 cents a year against 13 dollars and 33 cents 19:10 – The honest version: nobody knows whose whisky it is; sherry or years, you choose 20:05 – No sponsor; the market: stills switched off, casks 30 to 40 percent cheaper; the men like Dale 21:16 – Homework: five minutes with nothing in the cart, beat it on two of three 21:35 – Next time: the 40 dollar rye and the number on the back; read the age, read the wood #scotch #singlemalt #macallan #speyside #whisky #distiller #distillertips #scotchwhisky #sherrycask #whiskytips #savemoney #totalwine
