Description
Americans lost almost $17 billion to legal sportsbooks last year, about $46 million a day, and the apps are working exactly as designed. Cases like $40,000 gone before the plane even took off.
A million dollars in savings, down to $15,000.
18 hours a day inside one betting app.
A $10 bettor who ended up betting $30,000 on one NFL game.
We analyse real sports betting losses (app win/loss statements, one-leg-away parlays, chasing losses at 3 a.m.) and the partners who found six-figure gambling debts. Then we follow the money: the parlay math the apps don't show you (a $10 six-leg parlay hides a ~24% house edge), why parlays are a third of the money bet but more than 60% of what sportsbooks win, live betting, "bonus bets", VIP hosts, and why winners get limited. We look at what the research says about credit scores, bankruptcies and savings, and go back to PASPA, the 2015 DraftKings and FanDuel ad blitz and the 2018 Supreme Court ruling (Murphy v. NCAA) that put a sportsbook in every pocket. Plus the new back door: Kalshi, Polymarket and prediction markets, open to 18-year-olds even in California and Texas. And the NBA and MLB betting cases, Shohei Ohtani's interpreter, and the new 90% gambling-loss tax rule.
