Description

Less than 45 minutes. That's how fast a compound from onions reached its peak in human blood in a Dutch study, and half of it was still there 28 hours later. So what does raw onion really do to your blood? In this video we follow the research from the cutting board into the bloodstream. In the lab, raw onion made platelets less sticky, but onion steamed for 10 minutes did the opposite. We cover the Ig Nobel Prize-winning discovery of the onion "tear enzyme," why sharp onions beat sweet ones, why onion quercetin is absorbed about twice as well as pure quercetin, and what human trials found for platelets and blood pressure. You'll also learn why raw onion is not a blood thinner, why the real caution is with quercetin supplements, and five simple ways to get more from the onions you already eat. ⚠️ This video is for education only and is not medical advice. If you take warfarin, another blood thinner or an antiplatelet drug such as clopidogrel, speak with your doctor or pharmacist before taking quercetin or onion extract supplements. Never stop or change prescribed medication on your own. 📚 Sources Hollman et al. 1997, FEBS Letters (onion quercetin absorption and half-life): https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/9414116/ Hollman et al. 1995, AJCN (52% vs 24% absorption): https://research.vu.nl/en/publications/bioavailability-of-the-dietary-antioxidant-flavonol-quercetin-in- Imai et al. 2002, Nature (tear enzyme): https://www.nature.com/articles/419685a Hansen et al. 2012, Nutrition Journal (steamed onion and platelets): https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC3490999/ Cavagnaro et al., boiling and onion antiplatelet activity: https://repositorio.inta.gob.ar/handle/20.500.12123/5719 Janssen et al. 1998, AJCN (7 days of onions, no platelet effect): https://agris.fao.org/search/fr/records/67052a82b1dfe472e145cc22 Hubbard et al. 2004, J Thromb Haemost (quercetin and platelets): https://reading-pure-test.eprints-hosting.org/13304/ Hubbard et al. 2006, British Journal of Nutrition (onion soup): https://centaur.reading.ac.uk/10171/ Brüll et al. 2015, British Journal of Nutrition (onion skin extract and blood pressure): https://core-cms.cambridgecore.org/core/journals/british-journal-of-nutrition/volume/2B35194FEB7787B08058DD21AEE9DC80?pageNum=11 Serban et al. 2016, JAHA (quercetin and blood pressure meta-analysis): https://escholarship.org/uc/item/5t77n2q7 Warfarin and quercetin case report: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9608098 Gennaro et al. 2002, Tropea red onion peeling: https://www.iris.unict.it/handle/20.500.11769/12408 Czech Journal of Food Sciences 2004, boiling and onion quercetin: https://cjfs.agriculturejournals.cz/pdfs/cjf/2004/10/27.pdf 🔔 Subscribe to Remedy's Nutrition for the science behind everyday foods, herbs and habits. 🌐 remedysnutritions.com #onion #bloodhealth #nutritionscience ----------- ⚠️ Disclaimer: Content on Remedy's Nutrition is for general educational purposes only and is not a substitute for informed medical advice or treatment.
