Description
🔧 Everything I learned fixing HVAC for 25 years, in one plain-English book.
📘 THE HVAC SURVIVAL GUIDE - get it here: https://raydutton.com
Click. Click. Then nothing. That is the sound a lot of you will hear on the first truly cold morning, standing at the thermostat with the heat turned up and a furnace that just will not catch. Most people hear that silence, decide it is dead, and dial the first number they find.
I ran those calls for twenty-five years, and I will tell you straight from the other side of the van: that silence is almost never a dead furnace. It is one of five things, and the furnace will tell you which one if you know where to look before you touch it. I walk them the way a technician works down the line, and the last one, the single most common reason a furnace quits, is a part smaller than your thumb.
Nearly every check in here costs you nothing, and each one is something a tech runs in his first ten minutes before he writes you a bill for it. I will also give you the exact words to say if anyone tries to sell you a five thousand dollar furnace over a fifteen dollar part.
CHAPTERS
0:00 Click, click, then nothing
0:43 1. The thermostat (the batteries nobody checks)
1:30 The furnace tells you what is wrong (the blinking light + sticker)
3:30 2. The power it needs (the switch and the breaker)
6:10 3. The clogged filter that shuts it down
7:46 4. The blocked vent pipe outside
9:52 5. The part smaller than your thumb (igniter vs flame sensor)
12:12 Where your list ends and the tech's begins (the words to say)
13:04 The ten-minute walkthrough
Tell me what state you are in, how old your furnace is, and which of the five it turned out to be. I read every one, and I am keeping track of which one catches the most people this winter.
I'm Ray Dutton. Keep your cool, and I'll see you in the next one.
