Description

Built to Last — my old-world household manual: https://ezrakaine.com I was eleven the one time Daadi Amos caught me pretending I knew a job I didn't — hitching a harness. I had watched him do it a hundred times, figured my hands knew it, and they did not. I had the throat-latch two fingers too loose, nothing you would see standing still, and everything the second a horse leans into that collar going downhill. He caught it before the team left the yard, ran a finger under the strap, felt the give, and said nothing. Re-did the buckle himself, and did not offer me that job again for two years. It passed man to boy, one job and one mistake at a time. Twenty of them. Let's count them down. Here's what these twenty jobs actually have in common, and it is not the horse, or the wood, or the road. Every single one of them was somebody older deciding your mistake would cost this farm less than your not knowing would. Not age, not time served — just somebody watching close enough to know when a wrong guess had gotten cheap enough to survive. Nobody ever sat me down and explained that. I only understood it by living through all twenty, one at a time, most of them without knowing which job I was even being tested for until it was already handed to me. Tell me in the comments which job was yours first, and what county you learned it in. I would like to get some of that written down while there is still somebody around who remembers teaching it. Twenty jobs, and not one of them was ever really about the job. Every one of them was somebody deciding you were worth the risk of being wrong. Next time — the one measurement on a wagon wheel that has to be wrong on purpose, and why building it exactly right would ruin it. Go on now — there's a farm waiting on you too. #FarmLife #Homesteading #OldWaysAreBest #ComingOfAge #WorkingHorses #Wheelwright #SelfReliance #FarmSafety #DraftHorses #TraditionalSkills #LostKnowledge #ForgottenSkills
