Description
There are two photographs in her Bible.
Not in an album. In the Bible, tucked into the pages somewhere around the Psalms, where they have been so long the paper has gone soft around them. One is her mother, young. The other is her mother old, in the chair, the last Christmas. Every time she opens that Book the two of them slide out a little, and she pushes them back in, and does not look at them for very long.
Her question is not whether heaven is real. She settled that a long time ago. Her question is smaller than that, and much more frightening, and she has never once asked it out loud in a church: will my mother know my face?
So here is the answer in the first two minutes, because this is a grief question and I do not make a grieving woman wait: YES. The pattern of the Bible, from one end to the other, is recognition. Every single time Scripture shows us people on the other side of death, they know each other. There is no passage anywhere in that Book where the dead are shown as strangers to one another. Not one.
Then, in this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha earns it:
• The strangest and strongest piece of evidence - the rich man in Luke 16 recognizes Lazarus AND Abraham, a man who had been dead two thousand years before he was born. Whatever is on the other side, knowing is not dimmed there. It is increased.
• Peter recognizes Moses and Elijah on the mountain (Matthew 17) - fourteen hundred years dead, no paintings, no photographs, and a fisherman knows which is which.
• David: "I will go to HIM" (2 Samuel 12:23) - said of a baby who never spoke.
• The risen Jesus - the firstfruits, the pattern for our bodies (1 Corinthians 15) - ate broiled fish, showed His hands, let Thomas touch the marks. Changed, yes. Still unmistakably Himself. The resurrection did not erase Him. It completed Him.
• "Now I know in part; then I shall know FULLY, even as I am fully known." (1 Corinthians 13:12) If knowing increases there, the idea that you will know your own mother LESS is exactly backwards.
And the two hard places, handled honestly:
• Isaiah 65:17 - "the former things will not be remembered" - the verse used to argue the opposite. Read the next two verses: what will not be remembered is the WEEPING. God does not heal you by deleting the people you love. He heals you by deleting the pain of the years without them.
• Matthew 22:30 - "neither marry nor be given in marriage" - for the woman who has been married forty years and heard something in her chest go cold. Jesus did not say you will not know him or love him. He said the INSTITUTION is not needed there, because there is nothing there to hold two people together against. "Your husband will not be less to you there. He will be more. Nobody tears up a photograph because the person walked into the room."
And she holds back the ending - a garden on a Sunday morning that answers not just WHETHER she will know you, but HOW. Stay to the finish.
"Jesus said to her, 'Mary.'" - John 20:16
💛 A gentle word, for the one with the asterisk: if you are not sure the person you are waiting for will be there at all - I did not know his heart, and neither does anyone who would hand you a confident answer about a dead man. "Will not the Judge of all the earth do right?" (Genesis 18:25) You are not the judge, and thank God. Leave it with the One who is kinder than you are, and go to bed.
I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. This one is about somebody you are waiting for - go and read every one of these for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His.
If this let you take the photographs out of the Bible for a minute, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another woman with two pictures near the Psalms. God bless you, mija.
📖 Tell me in the comments who you are waiting to see. And tell me this, because it is what I actually want to know: how did she say your NAME? Was there a nickname? A way she called you in from outside? A thing only she called you that nobody has called you since? I want to read a thousand of them. If the person you are waiting for is a husband, tell me how many years, and I will pray over that number this week. Be gentle with each other here. Tell me your county too. I read every one.
