Description
Built to Last — my old-world household manual: https://ezrakaine.com
When I was about nine, I found a low spot worn into the floorboards at the hub-boring bench,
and I thought it was damage. I got a hand plane to flatten it out before anybody noticed.
Daadi Amos stopped me before the first shaving came off. Didn't raise his voice. Just asked
how long a man's boots have to stand in one spot to wear oak down that far. I didn't know. He
told me, then told me never to touch it again as long as I kept this shop.
Twenty things in this building go into one wagon wheel. Most won't be here in another hundred
years. And number one was never a tool at all. It's the reason I never got to flatten that
floor.
Every one of the other nineteen things on this list wears out. A froe's edge dulls. A
drawknife gets reground thin over the years until there's nothing left to sharpen. Iron
rusts. Wood splits, or gets lost, or simply isn't made anymore by anybody who remembers how.
Almost none of them survive, which is the whole reason this list exists at all.
The floor doesn't wear out. It wears in.
Tell me in the comments if your own family kept a trade, and what's still standing from it —
a building, a bench, a floor worn down by feet that aren't there anymore. And tell me what
county it was in. I'd like to know how many of these shops are still standing somewhere,
quiet, waiting on someone to walk back in.
Go find the worn spot in your own life — the one thing that's still there because somebody
kept standing in it, on purpose, longer than anything else lasted.
