Description
As Uganda celebrated Independence Day on Friday, it almost felt as though the celebrations were reserved for the political elite, while ordinary Ugandans were left confronting the painful reality of what independence has come to mean in their lives.
Across social media, Ugandans exposed the rot, frustration and broken promises associated with the Museveni regime. Some were so disillusioned that they questioned the very meaning of independence.
Then came a Ugandan TikToker with a short skit that captured, in a painfully relatable way, what independence looks like to the ordinary citizen: hunger, unemployment, theft, hopelessness and the daily struggle to survive.
What exactly are ordinary Ugandans celebrating when the promise of independence feels so distant from their everyday reality?
Watch this skit, and then let’s talk about it. Because sometimes, a few minutes of satire can expose what years of political speeches have failed to explain.
