Description

This is a mistake I see a lot of builders make when it comes to installing stairs. They cut a notch in the back of the stair stringer, so they can use a joist hanger to support it. But here’s the problem, joist hangers are used to support the bottom of lumber- not a slice in the middle. Overtime this can create stress and cause a crack in your stringer. This is a stair stringer connector, and it costs less than 3 dollars. I think this is better way- let me show how I use them. I measure and snap a line where I want the stringers to land; then, I nail the top of the connectors in place with 8 joist hanger nails. I start with the outside stringers and work my way in. Instead of nails, I use joist hanger screws. These work great in tight spaces where there’s limited room to swing a hammer. The connectors are adjustable- you just bend up the bottom. Only one fastener goes underneath in the second to last hole. Maybe I’m being too picky, but these brackets with the nails stick off the wall a little bit, so I cut an eighth of an inch off the back of the stringers to make up the difference. What do you guys think? Is this good, or is there a better way? @hausplans #build #howto #construction #stairs #diy #contractor
