Description

🔗 Save $6,000 A Year with My Complete Amish Home-Saving Method I teach: https://eliasyoder.com The washing machine empties and water comes up in the shower. That is the moment. You flush the toilet and the bath gurgles. You run the kitchen tap and the floor drain bubbles. That is not a blocked drain. Every fixture in your house cannot block at the same instant. That is the one pipe they all empty into, the single line running out under your yard, and it has stopped. And there is a thing out there, within thirty feet of where you are sitting, put in on purpose for exactly this, that most people have never found and could not name. It is a capped pipe, and on the day the whole house backs up, knowing where it is can be the difference between a mess in the yard and sewage across your floor. My grandfather taught me this at the barn in a wet spring, when I was sixteen and certain I knew what I was doing. The alley drain had backed up and I had a shovel in the wet place, because that was where the trouble plainly was. He let me get a good way down, then asked where that water was supposed to go. I did not know. I had worked in that barn my whole life and never once thought about it. He walked me out to the hedge, pushed the grass back with his boot, and lifted a flat stone I must have walked over ten thousand times. Underneath was a brick-lined hole with the pipe running through the bottom of it. He said it was there so a man could look. What we go through: What a cleanout is, and the three places it is usually hidden Why opening it sends the backup into your yard instead of onto your floor How it tells you, in one look, which side of it the blockage is on Why that answer can mean the pipe is not yours and the bill is not yours either How to hunt for yours with a rod and your boot, before you need it How to open it safely, and why you never stand over it What a hand auger will shift and what it will not Roots, wipes, grease and a sagged pipe, and why a line that blocks twice needs a camera Why a full septic tank behaves exactly like a blockage The one minute check to do once a year while everything is working Said plainly on safety: if that line is full there is pressure behind the cap, so stand to one side and loosen it slowly. Gloves and eye protection, and wash properly afterwards. Keep children and animals off that ground until it is hosed down. And never pour chemical drain cleaner into a main line that is fully blocked, because it does not move the blockage, it waits, and the person who opens the pipe gets the whole of it. The limits. This is a diagnosis and an emergency measure, not a repair. Opening the cap relieves nothing if the blockage is between the house and the cleanout, though that is still useful information. And the moment water comes up anywhere in the house, stop using water. All of it. Every gallon you send down is a gallon coming back up, and telling the whole household at the first sign is worth more than anything else here. This week, go and find yours. Start at the wall nearest your main bathroom and walk the foundation, then walk the line toward the street or the tank. Clear the grass off it, make sure the cap will actually turn, and mark it so you can find it in the dark. A cleanout you cannot open is a cleanout you have not got. Tell me in the comments whether you found yours and where it turned out to be. And if you have told me your county before, tell me instead whether you are on a town sewer or a septic tank. Next time we go back to water coming in rather than going out, because a well with no power in it is not a dead well. I gathered the whole of it into a book at eliasyoder dot com. The people who built this country with their hands knew that, and we are only just starting to remember it. #EliasYoder #Plumbing #SewerCleanout #MainLine #HomeRepair #Backup #SepticTank #DrainClog #OldHouse #OldWays #SelfReliance #DIY #Maintenance #TreeRoots #HouseholdTips
