Description

When the power goes out in winter, the cold is the real danger. But for older adults and anyone living alone, it's the small things that let the cold win: a can you can't open, a staircase you can't see, a fall with nobody around to hear you. In this video I walk you through 12 Walmart items, every one under $5 last I checked, that fix exactly those problems: an easy-grip manual can opener, the right batteries (and the carbon monoxide alarm check most people skip), battery tap lights for the stairs and bathroom, a safety whistle, a pocket notebook for the phone numbers that live in your dead phone, matches and a long-reach lighter, a knit cap, thermal socks, Mylar emergency blankets, hand warmers, duct tape, and the number one item from the paint aisle that does more for your warmth than anything else on the list. You'll also learn why you should never heat your home with a gas stove or oven, how to use hand warmers safely if you have diabetes or poor circulation, how to set up one warm room, and when it's time to leave for a warming center. Prices vary by store and region. This is general safety information, not medical advice; ask your doctor about anything tied to your health. Sources mentioned: CDC, USDA, NFPA, National Institute on Aging, Texas Department of State Health Services. Which of these 12 is already in your house? Tell me in the comments. #poweroutage #winterprep #walmart
