Description

Why is my dryer vent on fire? Too much lint. So how do I prevent lint buildup? To start with I’m using 4” 26-gauge smooth wall pipe. It’s smooth on the inside so lint doesn’t get hung up, and it’s galvanized so it won’t rust. Code requires a 4” rigid metal duct pipe for dryer vent. This flex line is fine for hooking a dryer to a vent, but it shouldn’t be running inside of your walls. Next, when I’m connecting sections of rigid pipe, I make sure the crimps go with the direction of airflow. Lint could get hung up on these crimps if they’re facing the wrong way. Code doesn’t allow fasteners to protrude more than an 1/8” into the duct, because they can snag lint. I don’t use any screws, instead I use a good quality foil tape like this 3M 3340. It has an acrylic adhesive, and it’s rated for up to 300 degrees. I also tape the horizontal seams so humidity doesn’t leak out, and I know the pipe will stay together. Thanks so much for listening - I just really needed to vent. @hausplans #build #howto #construction #diy #contractor
