Description

Ladies and gentlemen, Uganda’s political leadership has turned accountability into a sick joke. After Kahinda Otafiire challenged Muhoozi over violence in politics, Muhoozi issued ultimatums demanding an apology. Now Andrew Mwenda has stepped in to defend him. And Mwenda’s defence? Instead of addressing Otafiire’s criticism of Muhoozi, he dragged Otafiire’s land controversies into the conversation. In plain English: Muhoozi faces questions about violence, so Mwenda’s response is to say Otafiire has questions to answer about land. What does one have to do with the other? If Otafiire has questions to answer about land, let him answer them. But that does not make the questions about Muhoozi disappear. This is the pathetic logic that poisons public accountability: You did this, but he did that! Nobody answers the question. Everyone points fingers, and the public is expected to applaud. If you raise questions about violence, address them. If you raise questions about land, address those too. One person’s wrongdoing does not excuse another’s. Uganda cannot build a serious country on whataboutism. When defending powerful people means changing the subject instead of answering questions, that is not accountability. It is a political circus—and ordinary Ugandans are left paying the price.
