live oil on your stainless steel works. That is the part nobody is lying to you about. A little on a cloth, over a refrigerator door, and the fingerprints are gone and the whole thing is even and bright.
For four days it is the best looking thing in the room. Then the dust finds something to stick to, and by December it is the worst, and it stays that way until somebody has a free Saturday.
Here is what I learned about that door, and about three things people take for scratches that are not scratches at all.
WHAT IS ACTUALLY ON YOUR STAINLESS
• The fine parallel lines you can see in a side light are not damage. That is the grain, and it came out of the factory that way.
• The cloudy patch is minerals. Your water dried on the steel and left what it was carrying behind.
• The little orange-brown freckles are not the steel rusting. That is iron somebody left there, and I say where it comes from.
• And a real scratch, which is rarer than you think, you can find with a fingernail.
WHAT I USE, AND IT HAS NOT CHANGED IN THIRTY-FIVE YEARS
Warm water in a bottle and a few drops of dish soap. Mist it, do not flood it. Wipe with a damp cloth, going with the grain. Then the part almost everybody skips, and it is the part that decides whether you see streaks.
I also tell you the one kind of door where the oil was the right call, because there is one, and I would have handed somebody the can myself.
I'm Mrs. Doris. Thirty-five years behind a school lunch line in Scioto County, Ohio, four hundred children a day on a dollar and five cents a tray. I show you what actually works, I tell you where it stops, and I say so when the common advice has it wrong.
TONIGHT, TWO MINUTES
• Go to your refrigerator door and stand so the light comes across it, not at it.
• Find the direction of the fine lines. On a tall door they usually run up and down. On a dishwasher front they usually run side to side.
• That direction is the only direction you ever wipe.
• Then dry it. Not because it is wet, but because of what the water would have left behind if you had not.
So tell me what you have made look better instead of actually better, and name your county with it. The water is not the same anywhere and on this one it changes the answer. I read every one.
