Your oven racks are the one thing in that kitchen you have never really cleaned. You wipe the door, you do the inside, and the racks go back in dirty, because there is no good way to do them at a sink and you know it.
There is a way, it costs about a quarter, and it is in the box next to your dishwasher. The job takes six hours and you do none of it.
Here is why it works, because it explains all six of these. A dishwasher tablet is not soap. Soap lifts grease by surrounding it. A tablet is mostly washing soda and a silicate, it goes strongly alkaline in hot water, and alkaline is what breaks down grease that has cooked. The brown on a rack is not grease sitting there. It is grease that got hot over and over until it turned into something closer to a varnish, and bonded to the metal. Dish soap cannot touch that. It was never you scrubbing wrong.
And the water has to be HOT. Not warm. Hot as the tap runs. The tablet will not fully break up in cool water and the chemistry slows down as the water cools, which is why the same tablet sits in a cold toilet in a lump and is gone in four minutes in hot water.
THE SIX
- The oven racks, in the bath, six hours
- The glass baking dish with the brown ring baked into the corners
- The oven door glass, in about four minutes
- The washing machine, empty and hot, plus the two places that cycle never reaches
- Scuff marks on paint, and this one is not in the kitchen at all
- The broiler pan and the grates off your stove top
And stay to the end for the one thing I would never put a tablet near. It is in your cupboard right now.
I'm Mrs. Doris. Thirty-five years behind a school lunch line in Scioto County, Ohio, four hundred children a day on a dollar and five cents a tray. I show you what actually works, I tell you where it stops, and I say so when the common advice has it wrong.
TONIGHT, AND YOU ARE OUT OF THE ROOM FOR ALL OF IT
- Both racks out of the oven and into the bath, laid on an old towel. The towel is for the tub, not for the racks. Steel on enamel for six hours leaves grey lines.
- Hot water until they are covered by an inch. One tablet at each end.
- Walk away. Six hours, or overnight.
- Then rinse them and DRY THEM BONE DRY with a towel before they go back in. You have just stripped every bit of oil off plated steel, so wet racks come back with orange freckles in a fortnight.
SAFETY, AND NONE OF IT IS OPTIONAL
- Gloves, and crack a window. This is the strongest thing most people have in the house and they keep it in an open box by the sink.
- NEVER in the same water as bleach, and never with vinegar. One of those makes a gas nobody should breathe in a small room. The other simply cancels the tablet out.
- NOT on bare or anodised aluminium, ever. Strong alkaline strips the skin off that metal and it goes black right through the surface. That is not a stain and it does not come back. If you are not sure what a pan is, it goes in the sink with dish soap and stays out of this.
- Not on nonstick, because of the grit.
- Not on a glass dish that is cracked or chipped. You are putting hot water and pressure on a weak point.
- On paint, a test spot first, low down where furniture hides it. Flat and matte paint can burnish, which means it comes up shinier than the smudge was.
THE HONEST VERDICT ON THE ONE IN THE TITLE
This is not the fastest way to do racks. A self-cleaning cycle with the racks taken out, or a hardware-store oven cleaner in a bag outside, both beat a tablet on speed. What a tablet beats them on is that it costs a quarter, it does not smell, you already own it, and you can start it tonight without buying anything or reading a warning label. Six hours of nothing against a trip to the store. That is the trade, and you should hear it from me rather than work it out on Saturday.
Half the brown on an oven door is between the two panes where nothing from the kitchen side will reach it, and that one has its own video on this channel.
So tell me what is in your oven right now that you have given up on. And tell me what county you are in, because your water decides how fast any of this works.
