Description
I retired at 54 and started a YouTube channel with absolutely no expectation that it would become part of our retirement income. Then, about six weeks after publishing my first video, Scott Unclocked was monetized.
In this video, I share what happened next—including what YouTube generated during my first 16 monetized days, how much I spent running the channel, the time commitment involved, what helped the channel grow so quickly, and whether I think it has actually been worth doing.
The numbers surprised me: $499 of YouTube revenue in those first 16 monetized days. But revenue isn't the whole story. I also had channel expenses and was spending roughly 8–10 hours each week researching, filming, editing, creating thumbnails and responding to viewers.
More importantly, YouTube was never part of the financial plan that allowed me to retire at 54. It's something I started after retirement—and any income it produces is a bonus.
Going forward, I'll include a YouTube income update in my regular monthly retirement budget videos so you can see how this develops over time.
