Description
She was sitting in a little office at the funeral home with a folder open in front of her, and the man was being very kind, and she could not hear him anymore. Because she had seen the two numbers. Burial, twelve thousand dollars. Cremation, two thousand. And she had four thousand dollars in the whole world, three children, and a mortgage payment due in eleven days.
So she chose. And she signed the paper. And about a month later, at two in the morning, a thought came to her that she has never said out loud to another living person.
What if I did something to him. What if, on the last day, when God raises the dead, my husband is not there - and it is because of me.
Mija, if you have carried that even once, here is the answer in the first two minutes, because I am not going to make a grieving woman sit through twenty minutes of teaching to find out whether her husband is all right: there is NO verse in the Bible that forbids cremation. Not one. Not in the Old Testament, not in the New. And the fear that God cannot raise a body that was burned is not in the Book either. Nobody put it there but us.
Then, in this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha shows you the whole thing properly:
• The honest other side first - burial IS the pattern of Scripture, and any video that pretends otherwise should be closed. Abraham buys a cave for four hundred shekels (Genesis 23). Joseph makes a nation swear to carry his bones, and four hundred years later somebody was carrying that box out of Egypt (Genesis 50:25; Exodus 13:19). Our Lord Himself was buried. But a PATTERN IS NOT A COMMAND - and there is no verse where God says "you shall not burn your dead."
• The two passages used as a weapon, read in context: Achan (Joshua 7) was an EXECUTION of a living man for a crime; and Amos 2:1 condemns Moab for digging up and burning the bones of an ENEMY king - a war crime against the dead, the exact opposite of a widow choosing what she can afford.
• And the story almost nobody knows: the men of Jabesh Gilead took down the bodies of Saul and his sons, BURNED them, buried the bones and fasted seven days (1 Samuel 31:12) - and Scripture calls those men valiant. Then King David sent word: "The LORD bless you for showing this KINDNESS." (2 Samuel 2:5)
• Then the real question - not is it allowed, but is He ABLE. Paul raises your exact question himself in 1 Corinthians 15:35, calls it foolish, and answers with a seed: "you do not plant the body that will be." The resurrection was never a repair job on the remains. Nobody gets their old body back - not the buried ones either.
And she holds back the last thing, the answer to whether there is "enough left" - and when you see where it comes from, I think you will laugh at yourself a little, in the good way. Stay to the finish.
"I am the God of Abraham... He is not the God of the dead but of the living." - Matthew 22:32
💛 To the woman who chose the cheaper number in that little office with her hand shaking: you did not fail him. You were being a good steward with what was in your hand, which is the thing Scripture actually asks of you. You made a hard decision in the worst week of your life, it was not a sin, and I want you to stop paying for it at two in the morning. And do not borrow twelve thousand dollars you cannot repay to buy a picture - God did not ask you for it. There is no bonus at the resurrection for the family that went into debt.
A practical word, mother to mother: if you cremated someone, MAKE A PLACE. A niche, a spot in the garden, a shelf with his name. Much of this guilt is grief wearing a costume - the ache is not theological, it is that there is nowhere to go on the anniversary. God is the one who told a whole nation to pile up twelve stones so nobody would forget. Your need for a place is not superstition.
I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. Everything here, go and read for yourself - this one is about somebody you love. Do not take my word for it. Take His.
If this let you sleep tonight, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another woman lying awake. God bless you, mija.
📖 Please be gentle in these comments - some of the people reading them made this decision in the hardest week of their lives. Tell me: what did your family do, and what were you taught about it? And if you chose cremation for someone you loved, say so if you can - there is a woman scrolling tonight who has never told anyone what she is afraid of, and seeing she is not alone will help her more than anything I said in twenty minutes. If you made a place, tell me what you put there. And tell me your county. I read every one.
