Home inspectors say an empty house often decays faster than a house full of people, because presence is what keeps a house alive. When King David was too afraid to take the ark of God any farther, he left it in the house of an ordinary man named Obed-Edom. Within three months, the king himself heard that God had blessed that house and everything in it. Most readers stop there, but Scripture goes on, and what happened to Obed-Edom's family generations later is one of the most beautiful details in the Bible.
