The Last Days of Númenor: A Countdown to Disaster

Númenor, Sauron, and the greatest downfall of the Second Age — how did the mightiest kingdom of Men end up at the bottom of the sea in 57 years? This Lord of the Rings deep dive counts down the fall of Númenor straight through Tolkien's Akallabêth, the tale behind every inherited object you see in Peter Jackson's films. We track the clock year by year: 3261, when Ar-Pharazôn the Golden lands at Umbar with a host so vast Sauron surrenders rather than fight; 3262, when the Dark Lord is taken to Númenor as a hostage; the slow slide from prisoner to counsellor to high priest of a Morgoth-cult built inside the King's own court. The White Tree Nimloth felled and burned in Sauron's Temple, and Isildur's near-fatal theft of a single fruit. Sauron's final lie — that Ar-Pharazôn could seize immortality by taking Aman itself. Amandil's silent voyage west. Eagles of cloud, lightning on the Temple, the Meneltarma smoking. The Great Armament, the Ban broken, and 3319 — the year Ilúvatar changes the world, Aman is removed from the Circles, and Númenor sinks. Plus what Sauron loses in the water that he can never rebuild: his fair face. From the wreckage sail nine ships — Elendil, Isildur, Anárion — carrying Narsil, the palantíri, and a seedling of the White Tree. The founding of Arnor and Gondor. Every heirloom in Rivendell and Minas Tirith is a survivor of this sinking. Sources: The Silmarillion (Akallabêth), The Lord of the Rings Appendix A and B, and Unfinished Tales.
