Description

In 1978, Canada had a problem. A Soviet nuclear reactor had just fallen out of the sky. Not a nuclear bomb. Not a missile. An actual nuclear-powered spy satellite. On January 24, 1978, the Soviet satellite Cosmos 954 re-entered Earth's atmosphere and broke apart over northern Canada, scattering radioactive debris across a vast wilderness. The satellite had been launched in 1977 to track naval vessels using radar, powered by an onboard nuclear reactor. When its orbit began to decay, attempts to move its reactor into a safer orbit failed. Canada and the United States launched a joint recovery mission: Operation Morning Light. Search teams braved freezing temperatures, remote forests and frozen lakes while tracking radioactive fragments across a search region of roughly 124,000 square kilometres. But according to Canadian government records, the operation recovered an estimated 0.1% of the satellite's nuclear power source. In 1981, the Soviet Union agreed to pay Canada three million Canadian dollars in compensation. An extraordinary Cold War incident that brought the dangers of nuclear-powered spacecraft crashing down to Earth. **SPACE DISASTERS — THE AXER STORIES** Extraordinary history. Forgotten disasters.
