Description
The Ramappa (Rudreshwara) Temple at Palampet, Telangana, begun in 1213 CE, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site on 25 July 2021. This 3D Short explains the physics behind its 800+ years of survival. Foundation: a bordered, compacted sand box that ICOMOS describes as a Kakatiya earthquake-resilience innovation, reported to be about 3 m deep with a fill of sand, jaggery and karakkaya binders. Superstructure: a five-tier vimana of porous floating bricks reported at 0.85–0.9 g/cm³ versus about 2.2 g/cm³ for modern bricks, so an equal-volume brick weighs roughly 60% less. Hydrology: the temple stands beside the Kakatiya-built Ramappa Cheruvu tank, and the Voger channel carries water to the inner temple complex. ICOMOS also records that sand is slowly leaking from the foundation and the floor has settled, yet the temple has never collapsed. Mulugu district lies in Seismic Zone III, and an M5.3 earthquake struck it on 4 December 2024. (Ramappa Temple +7)

Technical Disclaimer: Educational 3D reconstruction. Brick density (0.85–0.9 g/cm³), sand-box depth (about 3 m) and fill ingredients are reported figures from the Kakatiya Heritage Trust and press accounts of the UNESCO dossier, not independent laboratory certification. Load-path, shear-wave and settlement animations are schematic visualizations, not engineering simulations, and the 60% figure is derived from the reported densities for equal brick volume.
