A runaway slave named Androclus was thrown to the biggest lion in the arena in Rome. The lion charged, stopped, and licked his hands. Years earlier, hiding in a cave in Africa, he had pulled a huge thorn out of a limping lion's paw, and the lion fed him for three years. Then soldiers caught him and sent him to Rome to be killed by the beasts. The lion had been caught too. The emperor freed them both, and Androclus walked the city with his lion on a leash while people gave him money.
