Right now prices are pushing past $6 a gallon in parts of the country, and some stations have run out entirely. In California the situation reached a point where certain pumps physically could not display the price, because the screens top out at $9.99 a gallon. At some stations that $9.99 reading may simply be the highest number the machine is capable of showing. At others, pumps are reading "OUT" or sitting at zero, because there is no diesel left to sell.
In this video we break down what's actually driving it — disruption around the Strait of Hormuz, rising crude prices, strained refinery capacity, and a global diesel supply that was already tight before any of this started.
We also get into why simply releasing more crude oil doesn't fix this quickly. Crude isn't fuel yet. It still has to be refined into diesel, gasoline and jet fuel before anyone can put it in a tank, and refining capacity is the actual bottleneck. More oil in the system doesn't help if there's nowhere to process it.
Diesel and home heating oil come from the same part of the barrel. Which means as winter demand builds, heating competes directly with freight for the same limited supply.
The damage isn't landing evenly either. Large carriers often lock in fuel contracts ahead of time and can ride out a spike. Independent owner-operators buy at whatever the pump says that morning. Some drivers are reportedly parking their trucks entirely, because once fuel eats the margin, running a load can mean working for nothing.
Farmers are getting hit from several directions at once — tractors, harvesters, irrigation, and the cost of moving the harvest afterward. Construction firms, delivery companies, contractors and small businesses are all facing the same squeeze on the same week.
When input costs move like this, a business has two options. Absorb it, or pass it along. Most eventually pass it along.
And there's a compounding problem building underneath all of it. If refineries shift toward diesel production while other fuel supplies tighten, shipping costs can climb at the same time freight costs do. That means an imported product can get hit twice — once crossing the ocean, and again crossing the country by truck.
Layer that on top of inflation, borrowing costs and household debt that were already stretching budgets, and this stops being a story about what drivers see at the pump. It becomes a story about what everyone else pays three months later.
Because fuel isn't really a product. It's an input into almost everything else.
