📖 every method for the whole house, written down: https://berthacleans.com
Open your dryer in the middle of the cycle and put your hand on the towels. Warm and damp after a full hour. So you run it again, and somebody says the dryer is getting old. Mija, it is not old. It is choked. A dryer is a fan with a heater that pushes steam out through a pipe in your wall, and when lint packs that pipe, the steam stays in your towels. Nothing is broken. It cannot breathe. My mother dried on a line and never had this problem. The first thing she did with a dryer in this country was find every place the lint could hide. There are five.
5. THE LINT SCREEN, WASHED: hold it under the tap. Water sitting in a puddle on the mesh means it is coated with wax from dryer sheets. Warm water, a drop of dish soap, an old toothbrush, rinse until the water falls through, dry it fully before it goes back. Once a month.
4. THE SLOT UNDER THE SCREEN: the crevice tool all the way down, then a long flexible dryer brush, or a straightened coat hanger with an old sock rubber-banded on the end. This is where the gray slab comes out, six inches from the heater.
3. INSIDE THE DRUM: vacuum the holes in the back wall, damp cloth, lift the door seal and wipe inside it. The two metal strips inside the door are the dryness sensors: wipe them with rubbing alcohol so the machine stops lying about dry.
2. THE HOSE BEHIND THE MACHINE: UNPLUG first. Gas dryer: never touch the gas pipe, only the vent hose, and if the gas pipe is in the way, call someone. Rock the dryer out slowly. Foil accordion hose squashed flat = replace it with a smooth metal pipe (about $15 at Walmart). Brush it, vacuum the dryer's exhaust hole and the wall opening, put it back short and straight, leave a hand of space behind the machine.
1. THE FLAP OUTSIDE: lift it. Pull the lint out of the pipe, take out any nest, make sure the flap lifts and drops shut on its own. Take off any mesh someone wired over it. Run the dryer on air and feel the flap blow hard like a hair dryer. That is the test.
THE PROOF: the same towels, one cycle. Before: a full cycle plus forty minutes. After: fifty minutes, dry to the heart, machine warm not hot.
HONEST WORDS: thousands of house fires a year in this country start in a dryer, most in a vent nobody cleaned. If all five places are clean and it still does not dry, now you call the repair man, and now you know it is not the lint. If the pipe climbs through the roof, that is the vent company's job every couple of years.
WHO PROFITS: the safety fuse that pops when the vent is choked, the $250 visit to change the $10 part, the new $800 dryer sold to a family whose old one was fine, and the dryer sheets that coated the screen. Donde hay humo, hay fuego.
THE HABITS: the screen every load, washed once a month. No dryer sheets on towels. All five places twice a year, when the clocks change. Towels on the line on a sunny Saturday.
This weekend, pull the screen and take the hanger down the slot. Tell me in the comments how big your slab was, how many cycles your towels take now, and your county. I read every one.
