Description
A woman I know spent four years building a pantry, a little at a time, exactly the way I would have told her to. She was proud of it and she had every reason to be.
Better than a third of it had quietly gone off. Nothing mouldy, nothing bulging. It had simply stopped being food while she was not looking, because the failure here is a taste rather than a sight.
One idea underneath the whole list. Fat goes off, and everything else on a dry shelf keeps. Rice, beans, salt, sugar, oats will sit for years. The moment a food carries oil, a clock starts, and it does not stop because the package is unopened.
In this video: why brown rice has six months and white rice has decades. What whole wheat flour does after three months. Why nuts are the highest oil content on most shelves. The container size mistake with cooking oil, and how to smell rancid before you waste a whole jug. And the canned goods that genuinely do not last for years, which surprises people who have been at this a long time.
Number one is not a food. It is heat, and where you are keeping the reserve, and it is why the other six failed faster than they should have. Roughly every eighteen degrees doubles the speed of all of it, which means a garage in July is aging four years of food in one.

💬 Which of these seven is on your shelves right now? Be honest, I had three of them.
