The case stems from a late-night incident at an after-hours adult-entertainment club where Garza worked as the DJ. The complainant was a dancer he had been seeing. Garza says money disappeared from his bag and he believed she had taken it. Everyone had been drinking, an argument broke out and things became physical. Under questioning, Garza admits he knocked her unconscious. The complainant suffered major injuries and was treated in the ICU. Garza says he was also attacked by club staff afterward and required roughly seven staples in his head. But sentencing takes an unusual turn when Judge Boyd asks when Garza was arrested and when prosecutors actually indicted the case. Garza was arrested July 16, 2024. He was not indicted until June 9, 2026. During that nearly two-year gap, Garza remained on GPS monitoring, completed barber school, began working as a barber and says he is now working toward opening his own barber school. Judge Boyd openly questions why it took prosecutors so long to move the case forward. She says courts are dealing with people's lives and points out how much easier the sentencing decision might have been if the case had been indicted closer to the arrest. That leaves Boyd weighing two very different sides of the case: major injuries suffered by the complainant against nearly two years of apparent progress while Garza remained free on bond. In the end, the injuries prove too serious for Boyd to overlook. She denies Garza's request for probation and sentences him to two years in prison while retaining jurisdiction.
