Description
There is a shelf in the house I grew up in, and I could draw it for you from memory with my eyes closed.
A little cloth on top, the good one, ironed. My grandfather's photograph in a frame that never matched anything. The tall glass candle. A dry palm frond from a Palm Sunday years before I was born. A rosary that belonged to a woman I never met. And underneath all of it, my mother's Bible - the real one, the one falling apart, not the good one on the high shelf.
Nobody in that house ever called it an altar. It did not have a name. But every one of us knew what it was, and I will tell you exactly how we knew: because you did not put your keys on it.
Some of you are nodding, because there is one in your mother's house right now. And some of you have gone very still, because you were taught - clearly, and by people who love you - that a shelf like that is the definition of idolatry, and it has been sitting quietly between you and your family for years.
So today we ask it out loud. In this episode of The Mexican Mother's Bible, Bertha gives the honest half first, and it is blunt:
• An altar in Scripture is a place of SACRIFICE - stone, blood, fire. Nothing has ever been killed on your mother's shelf, so in the Bible's own vocabulary it is not an altar at all, and we should be honest that we are borrowing the word.
• There is no sacrifice left for you to make. "And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary." (Hebrews 10:18) If anyone tells you your home REQUIRES an altar for your prayers to work, walk away - your access to God does not depend on your furniture.
• And you do not pray TO anything on a shelf (Exodus 20:4-5; 1 Timothy 2:5 - one mediator).
And then it goes the other way entirely, because Scripture is full of people setting apart places:
• Every place God met Abram, he marked it (Genesis 12:7-8). Jacob set up a stone and named it Bethel, house of God (Genesis 28).
• Genesis 35:1-3 - the passage almost nobody quotes. God says "build an altar there," and Jacob's FIRST act is to tell his household: "Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you." The clearing comes before the corner.
• Jesus commands a place: "go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen." (Matthew 6:6) Not a shelf - but absolutely a PLACE.
• "As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." (Joshua 24:15) - where "family altar" actually comes from.
• And for the first three hundred years, the church WAS houses (Acts 2:46; Romans 16:5). Our mothers were not inventing something strange. They were doing the oldest ordinary Christian thing there is.
Then she holds back the ending - where the real altar in your house actually is. It is not the shelf, it is not a room, and once you see it you will not be able to unsee it. Stay to the finish.
"Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you?" - 1 Corinthians 6:19
💛 A gentle word: the shelf is completely optional. Romans 14 - "each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind." If a corner like that troubles your conscience because of what it meant where you came from, do not have one, and let nobody shame you into it. A chair by the window is enough. A locked bathroom door at six in the morning is enough - half the mothers watching know that is the only door in the house that locks. And please do not go to war with your mother about her shelf. Ask her what is on it and why. You may find she has known 1 Timothy 2:5 longer than you have been alive.
I am not a pastor. I have no letters after my name and no pulpit to stand behind. I am a mother with a worn Bible, passing down what was passed down to me. When I tell you what I believe a passage means, go and read it for yourself. Do not take my word for it. Take His.
If this settled something you have carried a long time, please LIKE and SUBSCRIBE so it reaches another house. God bless you, mija.
📖 Tell me in the comments: what is on the shelf in your mother's house? Describe it for me - the cloth, the photographs, the candle, the palm, the little things nobody else would understand. And what is yours, if you have one? Or is it a chair, a kitchen table, a locked bathroom door at six in the morning? Tell me where you go. And tell me your county. I read every one, and I pray over more of them than you know.
